Pine Telephone System, Inc. (Pine) with headquarters located in Halfway, Oregon, owns and operates the exchanges of Halfway and Granite in Northeastern Oregon and the Three Rivers Exchange in Central, north of Bend. 

History of Pine Telephone System, Inc.

Pine Telephone started out as a telephone cooperative in the early 1900’s and came under private ownership in 1945.  Approximately three fourths of Pine Telephone’s customers have fiber to the home which enables broadband service if desired.  It has always been Pine Telephone’s philosophy to provide the best technology available to its customers.

The Halfway exchange covers 383 square miles serving 876 access lines and the Granite exchange covers 237 square miles service 101 access lines.  At year end 2005 there were 839 subscribers over 287.71 route miles for the Halfway exchange, for a density of 2.92 subscribers per route mile.   For the Granite exchange, there were 91 subscribers over 140.50 route miles, for a density of 0.65 subscribers per route mile.  The total system has 930 subscribers over 428 route miles for a density of 2.17 subscribers per route mile.  At the present time, the Three Rivers area is being built out.

There are ten employees of the company, eight in the Halfway Exchange and three in the Three Rivers Exchange. 

Halfway Exchange

Pine Telephone’s Halfway exchange includes two serving areas, Halfway and Oxbow.  The subscribers in the Halfway service area are all located in Baker County, Oregon.  The Oxbow service area has subscribers in Baker County and Wallowa County, Oregon, and Adams County, Idaho.
